Remarks
I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve been fortunate in my career. I’ve never been sidetracked from a path through the arts or been forced to accept other avenues of employment. Each choice I made felt connected in some way between past and future artistic endeavors.
Whether it was seemingly unrelated skills in scenic carpentry, painting for the stage, design, illustration or the practice of film production, each eventually did contribute to my 40 year career.
Education, opportunity and a network of friends helped me to surf a variety of waves within the arts-from theater (whether acting, directing, painting or design) to creating rubber creatures for film, old school model making at I.L.M, various periods of location work for the Stage Employees union or designing stop motion environments for Skellington Productions-all led up to a 21 year embrace of computer generated film production at Pixar.
Now, with ample time, I’ve been able to spend it on more personally felt expressions. Some examples shown here are early pieces that began in a cottage on Stinson beach 10 years ago. At the time, having been working daily with computers, I made the very conscious decision to avoid the use of software to indulge in endless variations on a theme with little fear of making a commitment to the page. Instead, once a source photo had been cut and pasted by hand, the undertaking became real, permanent and unique.
There’re some influences that might be apparent: the MareType series is a nod to Russian Constructivism, the Figures, Nudes and Parts might suggest Francis Bacon. The early pieces, especially the Bagatelles, were more quick sketches and happy accidents than something planned.
I look forward to finding the next inspiration in an old photo or a random page of text that’ll propel me into creative action.
Enjoy
